The Land and Wildlife

Picture
Ramsey Creek is located on 76 acres at the edge of the Appalachian Mountains in the inner piedmont less than 10 miles from the botanically rich Brevard Zone and the Chauga Belt mountains.

Consequently, the site is a “biological cross-roads” hosting mountain plants normally found at higher elevations, and of course, piedmont plants. The varied topography, and the fact that portions of the property were never plowed also contribute to the visual and botanical diversity with southern prairie, dry ridge-tops, rich alluvial streamside areas and a couple of moist coves and springs.

The rocks are mafic: containing minerals such as iron, magnesium and calcium that support unusual plants such as crested coral root (never before described in Oconee County when it was found at Ramsey Creek).

The gorge area has 5 shoals, so the sound of falling water is never far away. The wetlands and alluvial area above the gorge is home to a diverse community of plants and animals including amphibians, ducks, beavers and otters, along with rare plants such as the southern nodding trillium and the endemic Trillium discolor. The diversity of the property encourages an abundance of other wildlife visitors and inhabitants, including deer, black bear and bobcat.

In all, we have over 300 species of plants, an unusually high number for a site this size. (See examples in our Flower Gallery)

Our Trail System

We have over 3 miles of hiking trails (including about a mile of trail along the creek) for visitors to experience the beauty and diversity of the land. Click to print map.

Landscape Design
Initial designs by Lolly Tai, landscape architect. We did not implement all of the suggestions, but the core design remains. For example, when we were offered the historic Cross-Road Chapel slated for demolition, we decided that recycling the older structure, and preserving local cultural history trumped the plans for building something new.
“It is clear that the fate of the natural landscape depends not only on individual people, but on the coherence and vitality of the communities to which they belong and the means they develop for negotiating the relationship with the biotic community.”
